When we were reading the book The Westing Game, we started to talk about the stock market. We started to talk about how the market works and the rules about it. So we had a challenge, whoever can spend $20,000 fake dollars in stock money and gain the most wins! Well I spent $19,999.99 (pretty proud of that)!! Some of the stocks I invested in were
The Boeing company
General Electric company
revolution acceleration corp
Each stock has an abbreviation for example apple is APPL and the Boeing company is BA and so much and so froth.
In total, we checked our stock every Thursday, and if we gained money we would write it on an index card and logged it. In total I only lost money once, it was only $90. But it was always fun to come in the morning and have a bunch of mixed emotions came mostly happiness because I kept on gaining money.
All in all I think that even fake investing in the stock market it was still a really cool experience.
For the past 2 weeks my classmates and I have been working hard on getting our TED talks ready. You may be thinking that we actually went to give a TED talk in front of a bunch of people and we’re on the TED stage, or we used the TED filter on tik tok, but no. Good guess though!
At first I was really nervous when Mrs.Donnelly said we were doing TED talks and that we had to come up with a topic that we were really interested in. This is because I was interested in a lot of different topics. At first I wanted to do something about architecture in Chicago or something about historic buildings in big cities but I quickly figured out that that was too broad of a topic. Then I settled on sleep. Why? Well I wasn’t (still am) not getting enough sleep and I started to figure out the side effects of this and I get like everyone should know the consequences.
So once I narrowed it down to one topic I got to work! First we had to research our topic and find photos/visuals. Over time when we felt that we had enough information we began to find ways to present. All of us ended up using slides but in different ways. Earlier on our teacher started telling us tips and tricks with blog posts such as, have a concentrated pictures ,be engaged, font etiquette and so forth. This really helped because the little things made a huge difference.
Once we stated on our slides we had the option to make note cards with our “so each” on them. Not to read off them but if at any point we forgot something then we could use them.
After some time people started to get ready to present. So we would go outside of the classroom sometimes with another person and sometimes not but we would present our TED talk, over and over and over again so each time we would find something and fix it. We would even time ourselves! That really helped if we knew we were spending to much time on a slide we would shorten it. Once it finally came time to present it was kinda nerve racking but everyone TED talk was different and really interesting! Some people did one on different RV’s, global warming, body language and even a riddle! It was so interesting to learn little fun facts.
A word of advice I have is try to go simple. Don’t over do it with pictures and stick to one main topic. Don’t start getting into a whole different topic in the middle of presents. Also try to speak at a good pace and a calm pace, use different pitches in different scenarios.
Over the past 3 months, my classmates and I have been working on our tree books. During a ‘normal’ school year the 6th graders would have done hero books, but my class got to do tree books.you may be really confused and asking, what is a tree book? and what was the process like? let me tell you about it!
Throughout this whole experience we got to work with the amazing Peg Gignoux https://gignouxart.com/ I have actually worked with Ms. Peg before so that connection was already there! The first piece we worked on was screen printing were we essentially printed words all over card board pieces that would later become the actual tree part and the cover for out books. After that we got into the paper folding, which was creating the base of our books. This part was really tedious apposed to the screen printing were we were encouraged to ‘go crazy’ but with the folding it was really in line, one bad move and there’s no going back.
The next part of our tree book process was Akua ink. Personally this was definitely my favorite part. For this we got to bring in leaves and flowers or really whatever we found outside, then we brought them in. We used ink made out of water, and a gel pad and a roller. We would place the ink down and spread it on the gel pad. Then we would place something from what we found outside on the gel pad. Then the paper would go down and we would use the roller and roll all over the paper. In the end, we got some really beautiful pieces. When we came back next we were working directly on the inside of our tree books. We cut and glued a lot of pieces of our akua ink in the inside.
We later put pockets on the inside. They were for when we added out pieces of poetry in. In all I think that writing the poems was my favorite part. I’ve been told by many people that my writing is really good and quite personally writing is in my blood and it just comes easy to me. The pieces we wrote were ‘Salute to my roots’ were we wrote about people in our family who we look up to and or we are like. We also wrote ‘life lists’ as well as a ‘ when this is over’ poem where we wrote about all the things we took for granted and miss because of covid 19 and what we all learned because of this experience. The last piece was “my wish’ which was a more in depth life list were we wrote at least two wishes we had for the future.
We are currently reading the book Wishtree by Katherine Applegate. So far this book doesn’t seem like a roller coaster book but more of a chill book opposed to the previous book we read this year.
Our books were on display at the Frank Gallery in Chapel Hill https://www.frankisart.com/ . Having some of my art work up in a museum was a real confident booster. My favorite part about this whole experience was the fact that I could share this experience with my mom and dad.
(From left to right)Me,Mom,Dad and Ms.Peg
I was really exited and nervous because in my salute to my roots. I wrote about my mom and dad! I am so happy I got to share this with my parents and when I got my book back the next week I read my writing to my siblings who I also wrote about! Thank you so much Ms.Peg for helping my classmates and me with this!!!
For the last couple of month my peers and I have been working on creative writing through stories. For me, it has been a serious challenge getting through all of the part Mrs.Dowell has showed us about a story such as background check ,opening action scene, sticks and stones, monster problem and lastly the resolution. For me this whole journey has been really difficult because like others I have gotten stuck on multiple occasions and constantly thought that my story wasn’t going anywhere interesting. It got to the point were I was just writing the story and just letting the ideas flow. After I realized that a lot of authors do that with there writing I felt a lot more confident and inspired.😎
Somethingsthat really helped me get back into the flow of writing was reading other books 📚. This helped me tremendously because I could get a feel of different writing styles and different problems that I could switch up and incorporate into my story! I also would frequently watch random episodes of shows just to get more inspiration and use it was well. On some occasions, I would look at that journal I have full of random dreams I have had and I would get a lot of inspiration from that as well as little details.
When I was first told that we were going to share our stories with Mrs.Dowell I was really scared because a published author is going to listen to a bunch of 12-year-old read there stories. I don’t know about you but the thought of that still makes me nervous. But once I figured out that she wouldn’t be criticizing or being mean to us I calmed down and though about how lucky we were to have a published author listen to our stories and give us feedback! The feedback I received was that she really liked my background check because you could really get a feel for what each of my characters were like and you could tell how my main character felt about her brother and her relationship with her dad. When she first said this I was filled with pried because I have never really like d how my writing sounds but have been told I am good at it. I have always had mixed feeling when it came to writing so when she told me this I instantly had a confidence boost!
The foundation we started on when first starting to write our stories were ‘What if…?’ Questions such as ‘ What is a girl could talk to the moon’ we were first introduced to this by having to take three of our favorite Disney movies and change up the way the story is told and make what if questions off of that. The three movies I chose were, Atlantis, Princess diaries and beauty and the beast. This really helped me because I could miss-match and decide which plots worked and figure out what I liked.
The different components in a story surprised me in number. I always though you just had an intro and middle, conflict and then end it! But there are actually different steps and levels you have to a good story and it surprised me how I never noticed this in a book but one I knew what the plot was i could identify the monster problem and get a sense for when the story would end.
This journey has been a full roller coaster and in a way enjoyed every wall faced and how every time I could get out!

Today I am going to talk to you about the book I am currently reading called Radio Silence by Alice Osman and if it is a window or a mirror.
What do I mean by a window or mirror you may ask? Well a mirror is when you can reflect on something and you can relate to what is happening or in this case what you are reading. A window is when you are looking into a different life from a different perspective.
Radio Silence is about Frances Janvier who is a 17 yer old British-Ethiopian girl who also happens to be head girl with her mind set on going to Cambridge a prestigious school in the UK. Hanging out with friends aren’t her main focus but somehow still has some who invite to go hang out one night. Although she already knew Aled Last, her meeting him that night felt new. Is it because she could finally be herself? or something else? Those 6 words changed everything. Is he…? Debating if she should tell him what he said the morning after or keeping there awkward friendship where it is. After all if she tells him then she’ll have to out herself.
This book is a window for me on multiple occasions even though I can sometimes see myself in Frances; it’s little moment. For example, I am not British-Ethiopian but I am Mexican and black, and I do like to draw when inspiration sparks and I don’t like to share my drawings. I would rather hang out with friends than be studying and school isn’t my top priority. Although we clearly have our differences on the outside, it is still fascinating to have a sense into someone else’s life and everything they go through. For me, although I am still reading this book it is fascinating seeing these little emotions that I thought were special to me now being shared with Frances. And the nagging feeling of not being able to let something go until I know the answer. Those annoying gut feelings and problems make this a clear mirror for me.
I’m going to be talking about how my daily habits have been this year. It starts with when we did planks in Language Arts class. They were to show us daily habits and compound effect and in the end I could plank for 2 minuets and 20 seconds‼️
After that we got to choose out own daily habit in January and I chose to workout everyday and drink water everyday. It really help in a sense that drinking water is really hard to stay on top of but helps with headaches and that working out is calming for me when I’m stressed. Working out has always been a part of my daily habit I’m naturally a pretty fit person so you would think I also drink a lot of water but really the opposite. For me its a hard habit to keep up with and I get headaches a lot from that but in January I barley had any! I’m still working on drinking water and hope to get better 🤞🏽
But for February my new daily habit will be to read every day. I already do but I want to be able to read for a longer amount of time. If I’m invested in a book I can read it in like 30 minutes depending on how long it is, but I found a new author who I really recommend is Alice Osema. She is from the UK if I remember and she is just phenomenal. So far I have read her series Heartsopper and am currently reading Radio silence. But she truly is amazing. So I want to read as many of her books I can!! which is why I am going to be reading even more than I already do to build up my endurance and to expand my vocabulary and my book genre interests. 📚
I am a semicolon (;) . I am going to be honest I don’t really know what a semi colon does but it is powerful and you know it. This is because a semicolon seems like a very fierce punctuation this may sound a little odd but after a semicolon anything could lay on the other side. Especially in a story, a semicolon gives me a little shiver down my back. You never know if something bad will happen or good and even after you work up the courage to read it is an instant hook like you just want to know how the scene plays out. For example, “These cold winter days were bearable but the walks my parents would make us go on were miserable on those cold Sundays in January; this one was different.” Does that not want you to read more!! Although I just came up with this it was powerful. It just captures the magic of a semicolon. You may be wondering what this has to do with me? Well, I like to think of myself as unpredictable although I have a bad habit of being indecisive I like to think that is because the world could not be able to handle the decisions I make or chose to say so I just chose to be cautious and blend in.
If you have read some of my previous posts you would know that I did somewhat of a movie report! That was about 3 months ago! Sorry for the wait but here we go. Some Movies I have previously watched include Rampage and Ready Player One ( both PG-13) out of the two I would have to say that Rampage is my favorite! Maybe because Dwayne Johnson aka one of my favorite actor is starring in this movie. I also recently have watched the movie Ocean’s 8. This movie is by far one of my top 10 movies! It is so good and if you don’t know about the movie or background pretty much in 1960 the first movie Oceans 11 was about this man Lewis Milestone made a movie with a bunch of people and it was about Danny Ocean ( Frank Sinatra ) and like 4 other dudes how did a huge heist at 5 casinos on New Year’s Eve and pretty much got away with it and that movie was a block buster and so obviously people mad spin offs like Ocean’s 12 and 13 etc. but they were all with men staring and pulling all of this off so in 2018 they made another spin off but this time it was starring all women including Sandra Bullock , Anne Hathaway and Rihana!! it was such a good movie and was really intriguing!! So there you have it folks my 3 movie request for this month.
To start this post off right I would like to talk to you about how my class did planks every day and got up to 3 minuets and 40 seconds. This was part of our daily habit and every two days we would go up 10 seconds. Towards the last week we went up 10 seconds every day. In the end, we timed ourselves individually and saw how long we could plank for; I planked for 2 minuets and 8 seconds. It may not be that long, but I am really proud of my self and this daily habit has affected my new daily habit as well.
For my new daily habit, I am working out and stretching every day, I am also trying to drink a lot more water, this daily habit my be strange but it is something I need to work on, this may be just me but I don’t drink a lot of water throughout the day which is not good considering I play soccer and I am constantly either working out or doing something that requires energy and stamina. This ties into my stretching everyday. Since I’m a soccer player, I have to make sure that I am all stretched out and my body is warmed up before playing so at practice we do our warm up but also at home I stretch just to keep my body on a consistent schedule. Another habit I want to start to incorporate in my daily habit is to practice volleyball for at least 10 minuets everyday! Lately I have been really interested in volleyball possibly due to the fact that I have been watching an anime about it but either way it is really cool. Do you think I should start practicing volleyball?
Tell me what you think, and this month I have a movie review coming soon so stay tuned for that!
